New Delhi: In a major boost to India-US space cooperation, NASA has invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in its ambitious Moon Base programme, potentially giving India a larger role in the United States-led effort to establish a sustained human presence on the lunar surface.

The invitation was discussed during the ninth meeting of the India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group, held at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru on August 5-6. The development marks a significant expansion of cooperation beyond individual missions towards long-term lunar exploration, human spaceflight and space infrastructure.

From lunar missions to a permanent presence

NASA’s Moon Base programme is designed to move beyond the traditional model of visiting the Moon and returning to Earth. The agency plans to gradually establish an outpost near the lunar South Pole, using a combination of robotic missions, cargo landers, rovers and eventually crewed missions.

According to NASA, the proposed base is intended to support astronauts living and working on the Moon, enable scientific research and test technologies required for future deep-space missions, including eventual journeys to Mars.

The US Mission in India has pointed to that partnership as a foundation for expanding cooperation in space science and human-spaceflight technology.

Why the Moon Base matters

NASA’s current strategy represents a fundamental shift in the way the US views lunar exploration. Instead of treating the Moon as a destination for occasional missions, the agency wants to develop the infrastructure needed for a long-term human presence.

NASA says its Moon Base will be built progressively through robotic and human missions. Technologies under development include reliable power systems, autonomous robots and systems for dealing with lunar dust and other environmental challenges.

The lunar base is also being positioned as a testing ground for technologies that could eventually support human missions to Mars.
