Washington/Singapore: The AUKUS security alliance—comprising Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States—is rapidly transforming from a submarine-focused partnership into a cutting-edge military technology powerhouse. In a major strategic shift, the three nations have unveiled plans to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence-enabled underwater drone fleets, with the first operational capabilities expected to enter service from 2027.

The move signals a new era in naval warfare, where autonomous machines, rather than manned vessels alone, could play a decisive role in securing the world’s most contested maritime regions.

Beyond Submarines: The Next Phase of AUKUS

Since its launch in 2021, AUKUS has been widely associated with Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines. However, the alliance is now expanding its focus to advanced military technologies under its “Pillar II” framework, which includes artificial intelligence, cyber capabilities, quantum computing, hypersonic weapons and autonomous systems.

The latest initiative centers on the joint development of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs)—highly sophisticated robotic platforms capable of carrying out surveillance, intelligence gathering, anti-submarine missions, mine detection and protection of critical underwater infrastructure.

Defence experts say future underwater drone swarms could patrol strategic chokepoints, monitor enemy naval activity and safeguard vital seabed infrastructure, including internet cables and energy pipelines.

The accelerated drone program comes amid growing military competition in the Indo-Pacific, where major powers are racing to secure technological superiority at sea.

With underwater communication cables carrying the bulk of global internet traffic and seabed infrastructure becoming increasingly vulnerable, governments are investing heavily in systems capable of detecting and responding to threats beneath the ocean surface.

Analysts view AUKUS’ underwater drone initiative as part of a broader effort to strengthen deterrence, enhance maritime awareness and maintain strategic balance in the region.

AI Becomes the New Force Multiplier

Artificial intelligence is expected to be the defining feature of the next generation of underwater warfare. Advanced AI systems will enable autonomous navigation, target recognition, predictive threat assessment and real-time mission execution in environments where traditional communication and GPS signals are often unavailable.
