Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to help bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying the Indian leader has “very good ideas” aimed at finding a mutually acceptable solution.

Putin made the remarks while addressing the annual Valdai Discussion Club meeting in Moscow. He said Modi repeatedly raises the issue of ending the conflict during their discussions, despite the close and friendly relationship between India and Russia.

Putin praises Modi’s approach

According to Putin, Modi has a strong interest in ending the conflict and has put forward ideas that could contribute to a solution acceptable to the parties involved. The Russian president also described India’s position as neutral, while stressing that New Delhi remains interested in bringing the fighting to an end.

Putin expressed appreciation for Modi’s continued engagement, saying Russia was thankful for the Indian Prime Minister’s ideas and his desire to see the conflict resolved through peaceful means as soon as possible.

The comments are significant because they publicly acknowledge India’s continued diplomatic engagement on the Ukraine issue. Modi has maintained contact with both Moscow and Kyiv and has repeatedly advocated dialogue and diplomacy rather than a military solution.

Modi has repeatedly called for dialogue

India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are central to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In an interview with Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun in August, Modi said India had maintained a “principled and humanitarian” position and that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had shared their perspectives with him.

Modi also said India was willing to support meaningful efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement and argued that India’s relations with both sides could help contribute to an early and lasting peace.

At his recent meetings with Putin, Modi has similarly stressed the importance of moving away from continued warfare toward an end to the conflict. During their September meeting, Modi reiterated India’s support for peaceful methods to resolve the crisis.

India continues diplomatic engagement

Putin’s latest remarks come after his recent interactions with Modi during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, energy, infrastructure, technology, defence and other sectors, while the Ukraine conflict remains an important issue in their broader diplomatic discussions.

The Russian president’s comments also came against the backdrop of continuing international efforts to find a pathway toward ending the war, which began in February 2022.

Putin has separately warned that the wider international security environment is becoming increasingly dangerous and has called for avoiding further escalation. At the Valdai Forum, he said Russia remained interested in peaceful coexistence but also issued strong warnings concerning NATO and the security of Russian territory.

What Putin’s statement means

Putin’s remarks do not amount to an announcement of a new peace agreement or indicate that Russia and Ukraine have reached a settlement. Rather, they represent public recognition from Moscow of Modi’s continuing advocacy for dialogue and a negotiated solution.

For India, the comments underline New Delhi’s effort to maintain communication with Russia while also retaining diplomatic engagement with Ukraine and other international stakeholders. Modi’s stated position has been that diplomacy and dialogue should remain the route toward resolving the conflict.

Putin’s description of Modi’s proposals as ideas for “mutually acceptable solutions” therefore highlights the role India seeks to play: encouraging communication between the parties while avoiding alignment with either side of the conflict.
