Mumbai: “Trust your instincts, be authentic and let your designs reflect who you truly are.” Filmmaker and designer Mozez Singh delivered this message to aspiring fashion designers at the JD Design Awards 2026, urging them to prioritise individuality over changing trends.

Singh was addressing students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology during an interactive fireside chat in Mumbai, where fashion, storytelling, luxury and self-expression took centre stage.

Drawing from his experience across cinema and fashion, Singh spoke about the evolving relationship between storytelling, craftsmanship and luxury. He encouraged young designers to develop their own creative language instead of allowing popular trends to dictate their work.

“Fashion helps you express yourself and figure out who you are,” Singh said, describing design as more than a profession — a medium through which creators can communicate their identity and ideas.

Singh was felicitated as a ‘Visionary Filmmaker’ for his contribution to the creative industry by JD Institute trustee Yogesh Dalal and director Dr Payal Dalal.

The four-day Mumbai edition of the JD Design Awards culminated in a fashion showcase at St. Andrews Auditorium, where 87 young designers unveiled 37 collections, reimagining Indian traditions, art and crafts through a contemporary lens.

The event also featured ‘The Stock Room’, which gave students an opportunity to exhibit and sell their creations while gaining first-hand experience of the commercial side of the design industry.

According to the organisers, the Mumbai edition attracted 1,334 participants, including industry professionals, buyers, media representatives, alumni and design enthusiasts.

Reflecting on his interaction, Singh said he was impressed by the students’ willingness to experiment. “Fashion is personal,” he said, encouraging them to remain authentic and continue designing around their individual creative identities.

JD Institute Director Rinesh Dalal said interactions with established professionals such as Singh provide students with practical perspectives and creative exposure beyond the classroom.

Held for more than 27 years, the JD Design Awards provides emerging designers a platform to present their work, connect with industry professionals and gain real-world exposure.
