Mumbai: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday described India as an important commercial and business partner of the United States, underscoring the growing strategic and economic significance of bilateral relations. During his visit to Mumbai, Rubio highlighted India’s position as the world’s most populous country and largest democracy, while reaffirming its importance as a strategic partner and a key member of the Quad.

His remarks come amid efforts by New Delhi and Washington to strengthen economic engagement, expand cooperation across strategic sectors and resolve outstanding issues in their proposed bilateral trade agreement.

Rubio Highlights India’s Energy Capabilities

Speaking to the media in Mumbai, Rubio described India as a refining powerhouse, highlighting its ability to process heavy crude oil and contribute to meeting global energy requirements.

Responding to a question about India’s purchases of Russian oil, the US Secretary of State said New Delhi had repeatedly expressed its intention to diversify its energy portfolio, describing the approach as a sensible decision.

He added that the United States could supply some of India’s energy requirements, stressing that Washington had an interest in ensuring that its partners maintained diversified sources of energy.

The remarks highlight the potential for greater India-US cooperation in energy trade as India continues to balance its energy security priorities with its wider international partnerships.

Jaishankar, Rubio Hold Talks on Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with Rubio in Mumbai, with discussions focusing on ways to advance cooperation between the two countries.

The talks covered a broad range of issues, including trade, energy, technology, defence and people-to-people ties. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional developments.

Jaishankar shared details of the meeting in a social media post, highlighting the discussions on further strengthening India-US relations.

Rubio’s visit provides an opportunity for both countries to review their existing cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration under the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

The US Secretary of State arrived in Mumbai earlier on Tuesday and was received at the airport by Maharashtra government’s Culture Minister Ashish Shelar.

India-US Trade Deal Remains a Key Focus

The proposed bilateral trade agreement remains an important element of the broader engagement between New Delhi and Washington. Negotiations have involved discussions on tariffs, market access and other trade-related issues, alongside differences over India’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil.

During his Mumbai visit, Rubio expressed optimism about the negotiations, indicating that the two sides were close to reaching an agreement, although some issues remained unresolved.

A trade deal could provide fresh momentum to commercial ties, improve market access and create further opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Strategic Partnership Extends Beyond Trade

India and the United States continue to cooperate across several strategic areas, including defence, emerging technologies, energy security and regional stability. India’s participation in the Quad also remains an important pillar of their engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.

While differences over trade and energy procurement remain part of the bilateral relationship, both countries have continued to pursue cooperation in areas of shared interest.

Rubio’s visit is significant in this context, offering an opportunity for the two sides to address outstanding concerns while strengthening economic and strategic collaboration.

His remarks in Mumbai reinforce Washington’s recognition of India’s importance as a commercial partner and a major strategic player, as both countries seek to deepen their partnership in an increasingly complex global environment.
