News Desk: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge triggered a political controversy on Sunday after saying “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” during a public event in Patna, drawing a sharp response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and intensifying the political confrontation between the two parties.

The remark came during a programme marking the 139th birth anniversary of Dr Shri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first chief minister, popularly known as Shri Babu. Kharge was addressing the gathering when an exchange with a person in the audience prompted his controversial response.

The incident occurred as Kharge was speaking about alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He said those responsible for electoral wrongdoing would be sent to jail. A person in the audience reportedly remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not leave office, prompting Kharge to respond sharply.

The exchange quickly became a political flashpoint, with the BJP accusing the Congress chief of using inappropriate language against the Prime Minister and his family.

BJP Demands Apology

Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly criticised Kharge’s remark, accusing the Congress of crossing the limits of political decorum. Shah alleged that the party had repeatedly resorted to objectionable language against Modi and his family and linked the incident to what he described as frustration within the Congress.

Other BJP leaders also condemned the statement and demanded an apology from Kharge and the Congress leadership. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the language as derogatory and accused the opposition of pursuing personal attacks instead of constructive political debate.

The controversy has once again brought the conduct and language of political leaders into focus, with the BJP arguing that criticism of the government should not extend to personal remarks about the Prime Minister’s family.

Man at Centre of Exchange Says His Words Were Misunderstood

The incident took another turn after the man involved in the exchange, identified in media reports as Santosh Kumar from Chhapra, said his statement had been misunderstood.

Kumar claimed that he had been saying Modi would not leave power unless there was a revolt, but that only part of his sentence was heard. He maintained that he wanted Modi removed from office and had not intended to defend the Prime Minister’s continuation in power.

Kumar also alleged that he was assaulted by people at the venue following the misunderstanding. His account added another dimension to the controversy, although the allegation of assault has not been independently established here.

Kharge Attacks Modi Over Black Money

Beyond the exchange, Kharge launched a broader attack on the Prime Minister, the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Questioning Modi’s promise to bring back black money, the Congress president asked what had happened to the money that the Prime Minister had pledged to recover. He accused Modi of making unfulfilled promises and criticised the government over its handling of electoral and political issues.

Kharge also alleged that the SIR exercise was being used to remove names of opposition supporters from electoral rolls, raising concerns about voting rights and the fairness of elections. These allegations form part of the Congress’s wider campaign against what it calls electoral manipulation; the claims remain contested by its political opponents.

He called for opposition unity to defend the Constitution and protect citizens’ voting rights, describing the political struggle as a fight for democratic principles.

RSS and Nitish Kumar Also Come Under Fire

Kharge also criticised the RSS, alleging that its ideology contributed to communal tensions and arguing that social harmony would remain difficult to achieve while such divisions persisted.

He further questioned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s political alignment with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), arguing that the move was inconsistent with the socialist political tradition from which Kumar emerged.

The comments reflected the Congress president’s broader effort to challenge the BJP and its allies on issues ranging from electoral integrity to communal relations and political ideology.

Political Confrontation Intensifies

The Patna episode has added another flashpoint to the continuing confrontation between the Congress and the BJP. While the BJP has focused on Kharge’s choice of words and demanded an apology, the Congress president’s wider allegations concerning electoral rolls and democratic institutions remain central to the political dispute.

The controversy also underscores how exchanges at public rallies can quickly become national political issues, particularly when they involve senior leaders and the Prime Minister.

With both parties using the incident to reinforce their respective political arguments, Kharge’s remark is likely to remain a subject of debate over political accountability, public discourse and the standards expected of elected representatives.
