Patna: Bihar’s iconic GI-tagged Mithila Makhana has made a significant breakthrough in the international market, with an 18-metric-tonne consignment reaching Australia by sea for the first time.

The landmark shipment gives a major boost to Bihar’s efforts to take its traditional agricultural products to global markets and strengthens the international profile of Mithila Makhana, a product with Geographical Indication (GI) recognition.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the development, saying the consignment was procured directly from Darbhanga, allowing farmers to receive nearly 18 per cent more than the prevailing market price. The shipment was flagged off from Bihta Dry Port.

What Makes Mithila Makhana GI-Tagged?

The GI tag identifies a product as originating from a specific geographical region where its quality, reputation or characteristics are closely linked to that location.

For Mithila Makhana, the GI recognition is particularly important because it establishes a distinct identity for the makhana traditionally produced in the Mithila region of Bihar. It also helps protect the product’s regional name and strengthens its branding and marketability in domestic and international markets.

The GI status can therefore play an important role in positioning Mithila Makhana as an authentic Bihar-origin product, particularly as demand for Indian specialty foods grows overseas.

From Bihar’s Mithila Region to Australia

Bihar is the country’s dominant makhana-producing state, accounting for around 85 per cent of India’s total production. The crop has traditionally been cultivated and processed across the Mithila region and has long been part of the local agricultural and cultural economy.

Makhana, commonly known internationally as fox nuts, has gained popularity as a nutritious snack and health food. Its growing global demand has opened opportunities for Bihar’s farmers, processors and exporters.

The Australia-bound consignment marks another step in that journey. Exporting the product directly under its recognised Mithila Makhana identity could help create greater visibility for Bihar’s traditional produce in international markets.

GI Tag Adds Global Branding Power

The GI tag is more than a certification of geographical origin. For exporters, it can serve as an important branding and authenticity tool, helping distinguish genuine regional products from similar commodities available elsewhere.

For Mithila Makhana, this distinction could become increasingly valuable as international consumers seek traceable, authentic and region-specific food products.

Government agencies and export bodies have also been working to expand overseas markets for Indian agricultural products, including makhana and value-added makhana products.

Bigger Export Market, Better Farmer Returns

The latest shipment is significant not only for Bihar’s export ambitions but also for farmers and producers. Direct procurement and access to overseas markets can improve price realisation, encourage value addition and create opportunities across the wider makhana supply chain.

The Australia shipment follows earlier efforts to introduce GI-tagged Mithila Makhana to international markets, including consignments sent to countries such as New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

With the latest sea shipment, Bihar’s traditional fox nut has taken another step from Mithila’s ponds and farms to supermarket shelves and consumers abroad.

For Bihar, the message is clear: the GI tag is helping turn Mithila Makhana from a regional speciality into an increasingly recognisable global food brand.
