In what is being described as one of the biggest political upsets in Bihar in recent years, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor stormed to victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a constituency that had remained a saffron bastion for nearly three decades. The emphatic victory not only gives Kishor his first electoral mandate but also positions Jan Suraaj as a serious political challenger ahead of the next Assembly elections.

A Fortress Falls

Bankipur, one of Patna’s most influential urban constituencies, had long been considered a BJP stronghold, represented by the party continuously since the mid-1990s. Prashant Kishor defeated BJP nominee Neeraj Kumar by 19,324 votes, polling 64,151 votes in the by-election. Unlike conventional election campaigns, Kishor built his political base through an extensive statewide outreach programme and grassroots engagement before formally entering the electoral arena. His long padyatra across Bihar and sustained interaction with citizens helped Jan Suraaj emerge from a political experiment into a credible alternative.

Political observers believe the Bankipur verdict is an endorsement of that strategy and demonstrates that a campaign driven by local issues can challenge established political equations.

Traditional Players Marginalised

The by-election also exposed the shrinking influence of Bihar’s traditional regional players in the constituency. Candidates of both the Janata Dal (United) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) failed to make any significant impact, with reports indicating that both were unable to retain even their security deposits. The outcome effectively turned the contest into a direct battle between the BJP and Jan Suraaj.

BJP Accepts Verdict, Orders Review

Accepting the unexpected defeat, Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi said the party respected the people’s mandate and would conduct a comprehensive review to identify the factors behind the loss. Senior BJP leaders admitted that the outcome was disappointing, particularly because Bankipur had long been regarded as one of the party’s safest urban seats.
