Bengaluru: In a major step toward strengthening India’s digital infrastructure, the Government of India has commissioned a demonstration network based on White Rabbit precision timing technology in Bengaluru to securely distribute Indian Standard Time (IST) across critical sectors. The initiative marks a significant milestone in the country’s “One Nation, One Time” vision, aimed at providing an indigenous, highly accurate and tamper-resistant national timing system.

The demonstration network has been developed under the Department of Consumer Affairs in collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), which is India’s official timekeeping authority. The new system is designed to reduce dependence on foreign satellite-based timing sources such as GPS for applications where precise timing is crucial.

What is White Rabbit Technology?

White Rabbit is an advanced precision timing technology originally developed for high-energy physics experiments. It combines Precision Time Protocol (PTP) with Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) to synchronize clocks across fibre-optic networks with sub-nanosecond accuracy. The technology is already used in scientific facilities worldwide, including CERN, and is now being adapted for India’s national timing infrastructure.

Why the New IST Network Matters

Modern digital infrastructure relies heavily on accurate time synchronization. Even microsecond-level discrepancies can disrupt operations in sectors such as:

  • Banking and digital payments
  • Power grids
  • Telecommunications and 5G networks
  • Defence communications
  • Stock exchanges
  • Scientific research
  • Data centres

By creating a secure domestic timing network, India aims to ensure uninterrupted and authenticated time signals even if external satellite-based systems are disrupted or compromised.

Enhancing National Security

The White Rabbit-based network is expected to significantly improve cybersecurity and operational resilience by delivering authenticated, tamper-resistant IST over dedicated optical fibre networks. Officials believe this will reduce vulnerabilities associated with dependence on foreign timing sources and provide greater strategic autonomy for critical national infrastructure.

Part of ‘One Nation, One Time’ Vision

The commissioning of the Bengaluru demonstration network complements the Government’s broader initiative to establish a unified national time dissemination system. Under this programme, multiple regional time centres linked through atomic clocks and optical fibre networks will distribute a uniform Indian Standard Time nationwide. The initiative also aligns with the proposed Indian Standard Time Rules aimed at making IST the authoritative time reference for official, commercial and administrative purposes.

Future Rollout

Following the successful demonstration in Bengaluru, the government is expected to gradually expand the secure timing network across the country. Once fully operational, the system will serve as the backbone for India’s digital economy, supporting emerging technologies such as smart grids, autonomous systems, next-generation telecom networks and advanced scientific applications with highly precise and reliable time synchronization.
