Dehradun: The administration of the revered Badrinath Temple has ordered an official investigation after allegations of embezzlement involving devotees’ donations surfaced, prompting concerns over the management of funds at one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage sites.

The controversy emerged after claims circulated alleging irregularities in the handling of cash offerings and donations collected at the temple. Taking serious note of the matter, the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has constituted an inquiry committee to examine the allegations and determine whether any financial misconduct has occurred.

BKTC Chairman Hemant Dwivedi said the temple committee is committed to maintaining complete transparency in the administration of temple funds. He emphasized that no one found guilty of misappropriating devotees’ offerings would be spared, adding that strict disciplinary as well as legal action would be taken if the allegations are substantiated.

The committee has clarified that the probe will be impartial and evidence-based. Officials have been directed to examine financial records, donation registers, CCTV footage from relevant areas, and statements of employees associated with the collection and accounting of donations.

According to temple authorities, the inquiry is intended not only to verify the allegations but also to reinforce public confidence in the institution’s financial management. The committee has urged devotees to avoid believing or circulating unverified claims until the investigation is completed.

In the wake of the controversy, the BKTC has also tightened monitoring of all departments involved in handling donations and temple finances. Additional checks have been introduced at donation counting centres, treasury sections, accounting offices, and other units responsible for managing offerings received from pilgrims.

The Badrinath Temple, one of the four shrines of the revered Char Dham Yatra, attracts lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad every year. Donations offered by pilgrims play a crucial role in temple maintenance, religious activities, infrastructure development, and welfare initiatives.

The allegations have come at a time when financial accountability in religious institutions is receiving increased public attention across the country. Temple authorities maintain that the inquiry will establish the facts and ensure complete transparency in the management of devotees’ contributions.

The findings of the probe are expected to determine whether any financial irregularities occurred and whether criminal or departmental proceedings need to be initiated against those found responsible.
