Mamata Calls for Opposition Unity After BJP’s Bengal Blitz

Kolkata: After suffering a crushing electoral defeat in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has made an aggressive call for a united anti-BJP front, urging all opposition forces to set aside differences and come together against the saffron party.

Speaking outside her Kalighat residence on Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, Mamata described the BJP as the “first enemy” and appealed to political rivals, including Left and ultra-Left parties, to join a common platform.

“Our first enemy is the BJP. This is not the time for opposition forces to fight among themselves,” she said.

The statement marks Mamata Banerjee’s strongest political response yet after the BJP’s historic victory ended the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.

Mamata Reaches Out to Left, National Parties

In a significant political shift, Mamata extended an olive branch to parties that have traditionally opposed the TMC in Bengal politics.

She invited Left parties, national opposition groups and regional forces to hold discussions on building a broader anti-BJP alliance.

Political observers see the move as an attempt to regroup opposition forces after the BJP’s sweeping rise in Bengal.

Call to Students, NGOs and Civil Society

Beyond political parties, Mamata also appealed to student unions, activists and non-governmental organisations to join the anti-BJP movement.

Her remarks indicated plans to build a larger social and political mobilisation against the BJP government in the state.

BJP Ends TMC’s 15-Year Rule

The BJP scripted history by winning 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, securing its first-ever government in the state.

The Trinamool Congress, which had ruled Bengal since 2011, was reduced to 80 seats in a massive electoral setback for Mamata Banerjee.

Suvendu Adhikari Sworn In as Bengal’s First BJP CM

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister on Saturday at a grand ceremony in Kolkata attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders.

The swearing-in marked the beginning of a new political chapter in West Bengal, long considered one of the BJP’s toughest battlegrounds.
