India Inducts U.S.-Made Apache Helicopters into Army for Frontline Operations

New Delhi : In a major boost to India’s defense preparedness, the Indian Army has received its first batch of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters from the United States. The delivery marks a significant milestone in the Army’s modernization drive and enhances its offensive aerial firepower.

Often dubbed “flying tanks”, the Apache AH-64E is among the world’s most advanced multi-role attack helicopters. Equipped with cutting-edge weapons systems, precision targeting, night vision, and all-weather capabilities, the Apaches will significantly bolster the Army’s ability to conduct quick-response operations in hostile terrains, including high-altitude and border regions.

This induction follows an earlier acquisition by the Indian Air Force, which received 22 Apache helicopters under a $2.1 billion deal inked in 2015 with the U.S. government and Boeing. The Army later signed a separate contract for six additional Apache helicopters, tailored to meet ground force requirements, particularly in support of mechanized and infantry formations.

The helicopters are being delivered in a phased manner and will be integrated into a dedicated Apache squadron based along India’s western front. The AH-64E model features Longbow fire control radar, advanced avionics, and enhanced survivability in combat, making it a strategic force multiplier.

This delivery underscores the growing Indo-US defense partnership and marks a decisive step in transforming the Indian Army’s aerial strike capability for modern warfare.
