Mumbai:  Electric vehicle giant Tesla officially rolled into the Indian market today with the grand opening of its first showroom at the upscale Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The launch marks a major milestone in Tesla’s long-anticipated entry into India’s automobile landscape.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who inaugurated the experience centre, hailed Tesla’s arrival as a major boost for the state’s green mobility ambitions. “Tesla has not only arrived in India, it has arrived in the right city and the right state. Maharashtra is already leading the EV revolution, and this move strengthens our position further,” he said.

He revealed that Tesla is setting up logistics, service infrastructure, and four major charging stations across the state. “With this, Maharashtra stands out as Tesla’s preferred partner when it comes to future manufacturing plans,” he added.

According to property filings, Tesla has leased a 4,000 sq ft space for a staggering Rs 23.38 crore over five years, making it the most expensive showroom lease in the country at Rs 881 per sq ft, as per a News18 report. Alongside the showroom, the EV-maker has also secured a warehouse for servicing and a co-working office at Phoenix Market City near BKC.

Ahead of the official opening, Tesla teased its India entry with a slick teaser featuring Mumbai’s skyline and the words “India – July 2025,” setting off a social media frenzy among automobile enthusiasts.

The Tesla Model Y will be the first vehicle on display and sale, with two variants launched:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive: Rs 61,07,190 (on-road)

  • Long-Range RWD: Rs 69,15,190

Both prices are nearly $10,000 higher than their U.S. counterparts due to India’s steep import duties.

The most remarkable feature of this electric car is that it can travel up to 500 kilometers on a single full charge.

Tesla’s entry into India has been years in the making. It first accepted pre-orders for the Model 3 in 2016, with many Indian buyers putting down a $1,000 deposit. However, high import duties and regulatory roadblocks delayed its launch. In 2017, Elon Musk himself pointed to India’s 100% import tax on luxury cars as a major obstacle.

But now, with Tesla’s wheels finally hitting Indian roads, the company is already eyeing New Delhi for its next showroom, expected to open by the end of July.

India’s EV race has just gotten a whole lot faster — and flashier.
