CCL Signs Landmark ₹380 Cr Contract to Set Up New Kathara Coking Coal Washery in Bokaro, Jharkhand

Ranchi/Bokaro: In a major boost to India’s coking coal infrastructure, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has signed a landmark agreement with M/s Global Coal and Mining Pvt. Ltd. (GCML) for developing the New Kathara Coking Coal Washery under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model — a first for any CIL subsidiary.

The ₹380 crore project will be established in the Kathara Area of Bokaro district, Jharkhand, with a proposed capacity of 3 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA). It aims to improve coal quality by reducing ash content, thereby meeting the rising demands of India’s steel and energy sectors while reducing dependence on imported coking coal.

The agreement was formally signed on 10th July 2025 by senior CCL officials, including Suresh Talankar and Sanjay Kumar, and the Managing Director of GCML, in the presence of CCL CMD Nilendu Kumar Singh, along with Directors Pawan Kumar Mishra (Finance) and Harsh Nath Mishra (Personnel).

Describing the project as a milestone in CCL’s modernization drive, Singh said it aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and supports Mission Coking Coal for self-reliance in steel-grade coal production. The project is expected to be completed within 36 months and will generate local employment and boost socio-economic development in the region.

The initiative is being driven under the technical leadership of Shankar Nagarchi and Chandrashekhar Tiwari, with CCL also pursuing four additional washeries to further expand its coal beneficiation capabilities.
