New Delhi: A 4.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district late Tuesday night, sending tremors across several parts of the state and parts of Delhi-NCR.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake struck at around 10:23 pm, with its epicentre in Chamoli at a depth of approximately 13 km.

Tremors were felt in Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat and Rudraprayag. Residents in Bhowali, Haldwani, Khatima, Rishikesh, Gopeshwar and Badrinath also reported feeling the shaking.

The tremors were strong enough to be felt in parts of Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region, including Noida and Gurugram, triggering concern among residents.

The earthquake occurred in the seismically active Himalayan belt, where moderate and minor tremors are recorded periodically. Its relatively shallow depth meant that the shaking could be felt over a wider area.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties following the earthquake.

The latest tremor has once again highlighted the seismic vulnerability of Uttarakhand and the wider Himalayan region, as well as the need for earthquake preparedness in the densely populated areas of the Himalayan foothills and the National Capital Region.
