Washington approves potential sale of 10,000+ bombs and precision-guidance kits as Saudi Arabia strengthens its military capabilities

 

Washingaton: The United States has approved a potential $5 billion arms package for Saudi Arabia, featuring more than 10,000 bombs and precision-guidance kits, in another major boost to the kingdom’s military capabilities.

The proposed Foreign Military Sale, approved by the US State Department and notified to Congress, includes JDAM-ER (Joint Direct Attack Munition–Extended Range) guidance kits, along with 500-pound and 2,000-pound-class bombs and associated equipment.

The package includes 5,004 KMU-572 JDAM guidance kits, 5,000 KMU-556 JDAM guidance kits, 5,004 BLU-111 500-pound bombs and 5,000 BLU-117 2,000-pound bombs, according to the US notification.

The proposed deal also covers fuzes, target-detection systems, containers, spare parts, support equipment and technical and logistical assistance.

Why the deal matters

Washington says the sale would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s airborne and homeland-defence capabilities, improve its ability to respond to regional threats and enhance interoperability with US forces and other Gulf partners.

The approval comes as security tensions remain high across the Middle East, with Gulf states facing continuing concerns over missiles, drones and wider regional conflict.

The State Department has said the proposed sale would support US foreign-policy and national-security objectives and would not alter the basic military balance in the region.

Approval does not mean immediate delivery

Although widely described as a $5 billion US bomb supply, the announcement is technically an approval of a potential Foreign Military Sale. It is not, by itself, confirmation that all of the weapons will immediately be delivered to Saudi Arabia.

The proposed transaction remains subject to the US arms-sales process and subsequent contractual arrangements.

The deal further highlights the depth of the long-standing US-Saudi defence relationship, with American companies playing a major role in supplying and maintaining Saudi Arabia’s military systems.

With more than 10,000 bombs and thousands of precision-guidance kits involved, the proposed package would significantly expand Saudi Arabia’s inventory of guided air-delivered munitions while reinforcing Washington’s strategic defence partnership with Riyadh.
