New Delhi: In a significant push towards self-reliance in aerospace propulsion, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) on Tuesday unveiled three indigenously developed micro and small gas turbine engines designed to support India’s growing defence and unmanned systems ecosystem.

The three propulsion systems—NJ-05, NJ-50 and NJ-100—deliver thrust of 5 kg, 50 kg and 100 kg, respectively. Developed to address critical propulsion requirements for indigenous defence technologies, the engines are intended for potential applications in tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drone interceptors and compact missile systems.

The unveiling took place at the CSIR Headquarters in New Delhi, marking another step towards reducing dependence on imported propulsion technologies for specialised aerospace and defence platforms.

CSIR Director General and Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr N. Kalaiselvi, said the indigenous development of specialised and critical aerospace subsystems represents an important milestone in advancing the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat in aerospace engineering.

Focus on India’s Growing Drone Ecosystem

CSIR-NAL Director Dr Abhay A. Pashilkar highlighted the laboratory’s expanding role in supporting India’s rapidly developing drone ecosystem. He said Indian industry, including the country’s emerging aerospace start-up sector, has the capability to manufacture such advanced propulsion systems on a larger scale for defence requirements.

The development is particularly significant as compact, lightweight and reliable propulsion systems are increasingly important for unmanned platforms and other small aerospace systems.

CSIR-NAL’s earlier work in this field includes the NJ-5 micro gas turbine, which has been flight-tested on a small model aircraft and is listed by the laboratory as production-ready at TRL-9. The engine has a design sea-level static thrust of 50 N and a maximum thrust of 75 N.

The laboratory has also previously reported the development and testing of the 100 kgf-class NJ-100, aimed at powering tactical UAVs and cruise missiles. Its earlier development work included successful testing up to the engine’s design speed.

Boost for Indigenous Defence Propulsion

CSIR-NAL’s latest initiative strengthens India’s domestic capability in a strategically important area of aerospace technology. Indigenous availability of propulsion systems can provide defence manufacturers with greater flexibility in platform design, customisation and production while reducing reliance on overseas suppliers.

With the government increasingly emphasising indigenous development of drones, unmanned combat systems and precision technologies, the new engine family could provide an important propulsion base for a range of future Indian defence platforms.
