New Delhi: In a landmark move aimed at strengthening user privacy, Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced a long-awaited username feature that will allow people to connect and chat without sharing their mobile phone numbers. The feature marks one of the platform’s biggest identity and privacy upgrades since its launch and is expected to roll out globally in phases over the coming months.

A Major Boost to Privacy

Until now, WhatsApp required users to share their phone numbers before initiating a chat, often exposing personal contact details to strangers or temporary acquaintances. With usernames, users can keep their phone numbers private while continuing to enjoy the platform’s end-to-end encrypted messaging.

The feature is expected to be particularly useful for professionals, freelancers, creators, students, and users who frequently interact with people outside their existing contact list.

How the Feature Works

Users can reserve a unique username through the latest version of WhatsApp by navigating to Settings > Account > Username. The username will serve as an alternative identity for starting new conversations, while the phone number will remain linked to the account for registration purposes.

WhatsApp says usernames are completely optional, allowing users to continue using the app with their phone numbers if they choose.

Strict Rules to Prevent Misuse

To ensure authenticity and reduce impersonation, WhatsApp has introduced several rules for usernames. Each username must be unique, contain at least one letter, and follow specific formatting guidelines. Usernames resembling web addresses or violating platform policies will not be allowed.

The company has also reserved usernames belonging to well-known personalities, public figures, brands, and organizations to minimize the risk of fake accounts. Existing Facebook and Instagram users may be able to claim matching usernames, subject to availability.

No Public Search Directory

Unlike many social networking platforms, WhatsApp will not offer a public directory or searchable list of usernames. Users will need to know the exact username of the person they wish to contact, reducing unwanted messages and spam.

Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing an optional security feature called a username key, allowing users to add an extra layer of protection before unknown people can initiate conversations.
