Sydney/Bengaluru: UNSW Sydney has emerged as Australia’s top-ranked university in the QS World University Rankings 2027, securing the 19th position globally and becoming the only Australian institution in the world’s top 20.

The achievement comes just months before the launch of UNSW Bengaluru, the university’s first international campus, scheduled to open in August 2026 after receiving approval from India’s University Grants Commission (UGC).

Compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the rankings assessed 8,808 institutions worldwide, with 1,504 universities making the final list. UNSW has now maintained its place among the world’s top 20 universities for the fourth consecutive year.

UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Attila Brungs described the ranking as a reflection of the university’s commitment to academic excellence, cutting-edge research, innovation, and positive societal impact.

“Being recognised as Australia’s number one university and remaining in the global top 20 for the fourth consecutive year is a testament to the dedication of our students, staff, researchers and partners,” Brungs said. “This milestone is particularly significant as we prepare to launch our first international campus in India.”

Strong Performance Across Key Indicators

Among Australia’s 37 ranked universities, UNSW secured:

  • 1st place in Employment Outcomes (97.4/100)
  • 1st place in Sustainability (98/100)
  • 3rd place in Employer Reputation (94.3/100)
  • 3rd place in International Research Networks (96.9/100)

The university scored above 94% in eight of the nine ranking categories, highlighting its broad-based excellence.

Benchmark for Graduate Employability

A major contributor to UNSW’s ranking success was its outstanding performance in graduate employability. The university ranked first in Australia for Graduate Outcomes, reflecting the career success and leadership impact of its alumni.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education & Student Experience) Professor Sarah Maddison said UNSW’s strong industry connections and real-world learning opportunities continue to produce highly employable graduates equipped for global careers.

Sustainability Leadership

UNSW also reinforced its reputation as a sustainability leader, ranking 7th globally and 1st in Australia in the sustainability category.

Vice-President (Societal Impact, Equity and Engagement) Professor Verity Firth said the result reflects UNSW’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges while promoting equity, inclusion and positive social impact.

Boost for Indian Students

The upcoming UNSW Bengaluru campus will bring a globally ranked top-20 university closer to Indian students, offering access to world-class education, research opportunities, international networks and strong graduate employment outcomes.

As part of the broader UNSW global ecosystem, students at both the Sydney and Bengaluru campuses will benefit from the university’s focus on academic excellence, innovation, sustainability and industry engagement, preparing them to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
