New Delhi/Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) appears to be facing one of the most serious challenges in its parliamentary history, with reports claiming that 20 of its Lok Sabha MPs have expressed their willingness to support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The reported development comes at a time when TMC chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is in New Delhi for opposition alliance discussions, even as her party grapples with the fallout of its recent electoral defeat in West Bengal.

Kakoli Dastidar’s Letter Sparks Political Storm

At the centre of the controversy is a reported letter sent by TMC MP and former chief whip Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

According to reports, Dastidar informed the Speaker that 20 TMC MPs were willing to extend support to the NDA and sought appropriate seating arrangements alongside members of the ruling coalition in the Lok Sabha. Since Om Birla was reportedly away from the national capital, the letter was said to have been submitted directly to his office.

The reported communication has triggered intense speculation about a possible split within the Trinamool Congress and a significant shift in parliamentary alignments.

Meeting in Delhi Fuels Defection Buzz

The reports gained further momentum after claims that a group of TMC MPs held a closed-door meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the New Delhi residence of Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav.

While no official statement has been issued regarding the meeting, political observers view it as a significant development amid growing uncertainty within the TMC ranks.

Prominent Faces Among Reported Signatories

Media reports suggest that several well-known TMC parliamentarians are among those backing the move. The names being cited include Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sharmila Sarkar, Partha Bhowmik, Arup Chakraborty, Asit Mal, actor-politician Dev, actress-politicians Rachana Banerjee, Satabdi Roy and June Maliah, as well as former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan, among others.

If confirmed, the move would represent one of the largest parliamentary rebellions faced by the Trinamool Congress since its formation.

TMC’s Strength in Lok Sabha Could Shrink Dramatically

The Trinamool Congress currently holds 28 seats in the Lok Sabha, including party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Should the reported shift of 20 MPs become formal, the party’s strength and influence in Parliament would be significantly reduced, leaving only a small group of MPs firmly aligned with the current leadership.

Political analysts believe such a development would strengthen the NDA’s position in Parliament while dealing a major blow to the opposition camp.

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy’s Exit Adds to Turmoil

The reports have surfaced shortly after veteran TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and the party.

Roy reportedly criticized the party leadership for failing to adequately assess public sentiment after the election defeat and for marginalizing several senior leaders. His resignation has fueled speculation about deeper discontent within the organization.

Fallout of TMC’s Electoral Defeat Continues

The latest developments come in the aftermath of the West Bengal Assembly elections, where the BJP secured a decisive victory, ending the Trinamool Congress’s uninterrupted 15-year rule in the state.

As the political dust continues to settle, reports of defections, resignations and internal dissent are raising fresh questions about the future direction of the party and the leadership challenges confronting Mamata Banerjee.
