Chennai: In a dramatic political development in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Friday claimed that it has secured the backing of 120 MLAs to form the next government in the state after emerging as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections.

TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, falling short of the majority mark of 118 by just 10 seats. However, the party asserted that support from several opposition and regional parties has now pushed its numbers comfortably past the majority threshold.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, TVK leader Adhav Arjuna announced that the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have extended unconditional support to the Vijay-led formation for government formation.

The support coalition also includes the Indian National Congress, along with the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Together, the supporting parties contribute 13 MLAs, taking the alliance tally to 120.

TVK’s effective strength is expected to come down to 107 after Vijay vacates one of the two Assembly seats he won in the election. Despite that, the alliance remains above the halfway mark required to form the government.

Reports from Chennai showed CPI(M) leaders welcoming Vijay and expressing solidarity with TVK as discussions over government formation intensified. The development marks a major political shift in Tamil Nadu, where traditional Dravidian heavyweights have dominated state politics for decades.

The emergence of TVK as the leading force in the Assembly has triggered intense political speculation and nationwide attention, with Vijay now poised to play a decisive role in shaping the state’s next government.
