Washington: Fresh US intelligence inputs have sparked global concern over a possible Chinese move to supply weapons to Iran, a development that could sharply escalate tensions in West Asia amid an already fragile ceasefire.

According to intelligence assessments cited in multiple reports, Beijing is suspected to be considering the transfer of advanced air defence systems, including portable surface-to-air missiles. Such systems could significantly enhance Iran’s ability to counter aerial strikes, especially after recent attacks exposed vulnerabilities in its defence network.

Trump’s Tariff Threat and War Warning

Reacting strongly, Donald Trump on Sunday threatened China with “staggering” economic consequences if it proceeds with military assistance to Iran.

“If we catch them doing that, they get a 50 percent tariff, which is a staggering amount,” Trump said in an interview with Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News.

The US President is also expected to visit Beijing next month for high-level talks with Xi Jinping, after postponing an earlier summit due to the ongoing Iran conflict.

Trump further escalated rhetoric by warning that Washington could target Iran’s power plants and civilian energy infrastructure if a diplomatic resolution is not reached.

China Denies, Questions Persist

China has firmly rejected the allegations, maintaining that it does not supply arms to active conflict zones and adheres to international norms. Beijing has termed the claims speculative and politically driven.

However, analysts note that any such transfer—if it occurs—could be routed through indirect channels to avoid detection and diplomatic fallout.

Geopolitical Stakes Rise

The reported development comes soon after US-Iran talks in Islamabad collapsed without agreement, leaving key disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, missile capabilities, and regional security unresolved.

Experts warn that confirmed Chinese military support to Iran could deepen global divisions, strain US-China ties, and further destabilize West Asia at a time when ceasefire efforts remain delicate.

With tensions rising and diplomacy faltering, the possibility of a broader geopolitical confrontation looms large.
