Jewar: Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant leap in India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector.

During the visit, the Prime Minister toured the newly built terminal and was presented with a sacred artefact of Lord Buddha, adding a cultural dimension to the landmark event.

The project is being seen as a cornerstone in India’s ambition to emerge as a global aviation hub. Positioned as a major international gateway for the National Capital Region (NCR), the airport is expected to enhance connectivity and significantly upgrade regional aviation infrastructure.

Developed as the second international airport for Delhi-NCR, the facility will complement the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport, forming a dual-airport ecosystem aimed at reducing congestion and boosting passenger capacity.

Project Blueprint: Scale, Vision and Investment

The Noida International Airport is a greenfield international airport being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by Zurich Airport International AG.

  • Estimated Cost (Phase I): ₹11,000+ crore
  • Initial Capacity: 12 million passengers annually
  • Ultimate Capacity: Up to 70 million passengers per year

Once fully operational, the airport is expected to rank among Asia’s largest aviation hubs, reflecting the scale of India’s long-term infrastructure vision.

Phased Expansion Strategy

The airport is being developed in multiple stages to accommodate future demand:

Phase I:

  • Single runway and terminal
  • Capacity of 12 million passengers annually
  • Focus on domestic routes and select international operations

Future Phases:

  • Expansion to as many as six runways
  • Gradual scale-up to 70 million passengers annually
  • Development of cargo hubs, logistics parks, and a full-fledged aviation ecosystem

Economic Engine for North India

Beyond aviation, the project is expected to act as a powerful economic catalyst. Experts believe it will accelerate industrial growth across western Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Zone.

Key economic gains include:

  • Boost to exports and logistics networks
  • Growth of MSMEs and manufacturing clusters
  • Large-scale employment generation
  • Surge in real estate and infrastructure development

Boost for Farmers and Agri-Trade

The airport is also poised to transform agricultural trade dynamics in the region.

  • Faster export of perishable produce
  • Improved price realisation for farmers
  • Development of cold storage and agro-logistics chains

With its integrated cargo capabilities—initially handling over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually and scalable up to 18 lakh metric tonnes—the airport is set to become a crucial node in India’s supply chain network.

As operations expand in the coming years, the Noida International Airport is expected to not only decongest Delhi’s air traffic but also redefine the economic and logistics landscape of northern India.
