New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a new benchmark in Indian politics, becoming the longest-serving head of an elected government in the country’s history. The milestone comes as he completed 8,931 days in office—combining his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and as Prime Minister—edging past former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling’s record of 8,930 days.

With this, Modi has entered his 25th year in continuous executive leadership, marking a rare streak of political longevity at both state and national levels. The achievement underscores his sustained electoral success and enduring public mandate over more than two decades.

Modi’s political journey began with his appointment as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, a position he held for over 12 years until May 2014. He then transitioned to national leadership, taking oath as India’s 14th Prime Minister on May 26, 2014. Notably, he became the first non-Congress leader to secure a full majority in the Lok Sabha and later the first to complete two full terms and return for a third consecutive term.

Over the years, Modi has accumulated several distinctions. He is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and the only Prime Minister born after India’s Independence. His victories in three successive Lok Sabha elections—2014, 2019, and 2024—have further cemented his position as one of the most electorally dominant leaders in contemporary Indian politics.

Alongside political milestones, Modi has also expanded his digital footprint significantly. According to publicly available platform data, his YouTube channel recently crossed 30 million subscribers, making him one of the most-followed global leaders online. On Instagram, he surpassed 100 million followers earlier this year, becoming the first serving world leader to achieve the feat. His presence on X (formerly Twitter) also remains among the largest globally, with over 100 million followers.

Analysts view this combination of political continuity and digital outreach as a key factor behind Modi’s sustained influence, both domestically and internationally, as he continues to shape India’s political landscape.
