Sources familiar with internal discussions say Washington is determined to keep the vital maritime corridor open, with senior officials indicating that a range of measures—potentially including direct intervention—are under consideration. However, no final call has been made.

One official underscored that any action would be driven by American strategic priorities, noting that troop deployments have historically accompanied major US conflicts, regardless of administration.

Kharg Island: Iran’s Oil Lifeline

Kharg Island plays a pivotal role in Iran’s energy infrastructure, serving as the country’s primary oil export terminal.

Situated roughly 16 miles off Iran’s coast, the island handles nearly 90% of Iran’s crude and condensate exports. It is linked to key oil fields such as Ahvaz, Marun, and Gachsaran through an extensive pipeline network and features deep-water loading terminals capable of accommodating supertankers.

With storage capacity estimated at around 30 million barrels, Kharg acts as a critical buffer for Iran’s export operations.

The deliberations come as tensions intensify in the Persian Gulf, where Iranian actions have disrupted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most crucial oil transit routes.
