New Delhi: OpenAI has announced a major move for Indian users — offering a free one-year subscription to ChatGPT Go starting November 4, marking its biggest push yet into one of the world’s fastest-growing AI markets.

The announcement, made on October 28, means both new and existing users in India can access ChatGPT Go features without paying the usual ₹399 per month.

Launched in August 2025, ChatGPT Go is a lighter, budget-friendly plan positioned between the free and premium Plus/Pro tiers. It gives users expanded access — including higher message, image-generation, and file-upload limits — at nearly 10 times the capacity of the free version.

The plan currently appears region-specific, with OpenAI focusing on price-sensitive but tech-savvy markets like India.

Why India Matters

India has emerged as ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the US, with tens of millions of active monthly users. By making ChatGPT Go free, OpenAI aims to capture the country’s vast base of students, developers, and startups, who are rapidly adopting AI tools for coding, research, and content creation.

Experts say the move is also strategic, as OpenAI looks to strengthen its foothold before local AI competitors such as Google’s Gemini, Krutrim, and Sarvam AI gain further traction.

India’s Push for AI in Classrooms

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its plan to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) into school curriculums under the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE) 2023.

A stakeholder consultation held on October 29 brought together CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and AI experts to chart the roadmap. CBSE has formed an expert committee led by Prof. Karthik Raman of IIT Madras to design the AI & CT curriculum.

The initiative will embed AI learning from Grade 3 onwards, promoting the concept of “AI for Public Good” — ensuring students learn to think, create, and solve problems ethically in an AI-driven world.
