Mumbai: Bollywood and television veteran Satish Shah, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and versatility, passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Saturday due to kidney failure. He was 74.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news to NDTV, saying, “With a heavy heart, I want to say that our friend and a very good actor, Satish Shah, died around 2:30 pm today due to kidney failure. His health deteriorated at home, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he couldn’t survive. His cremation will take place today. It’s a huge loss for the industry.”

Shah became a household name with his breakthrough TV roles. He charmed audiences with 55 different characters in the 1984 sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and later starred as Prakash in Zee TV’s Filmy Chakkar (1995) and in popular shows like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004). He also led series such as Ghar Jamai (1997) and All The Best for DD2.

On the big screen, Shah shone in classics like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Umrao Jaan, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Main Hoon Na, and Fanaa, among others.

He married designer Madhu Shah in 1972.

Paying tribute, actor Johny Lever wrote on X: “Feeling extremely sad to share that we’ve lost a great artist & my dearest friend of over 40 years. Satish Bhai, you will truly be missed. Your immense contribution to film and television will never be forgotten.”
