New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held bilateral talks with Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez in New Delhi, with both leaders reviewing the entire spectrum of India-Venezuela relations and exploring ways to deepen cooperation in key sectors, including energy, trade, investment, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, transportation and renewable energy.

Rodríguez, who arrived in India on a five-day official visit, was received at Hyderabad House, where the two sides discussed avenues to strengthen the long-standing partnership between the two countries.

Focus on Energy Cooperation

Energy cooperation figured prominently during the discussions as India seeks to diversify its crude oil sources and strengthen energy security. Venezuela, home to some of the world’s largest proven oil reserves, has emerged as an important energy partner for India.

The leaders explored opportunities to expand cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector, while also discussing collaboration in renewable energy and sustainable development initiatives.

Expanding Economic and Trade Ties

Apart from energy, the talks focused on enhancing bilateral trade and investment. Both sides reviewed ongoing economic engagements and discussed measures to boost commercial exchanges between businesses and industries in the two countries.

The discussions also covered cooperation in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, digital technologies, transportation and other sectors of mutual interest.

Commitment to Stronger Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Modi and Acting President Rodríguez reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening India-Venezuela relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. The meeting built upon earlier interactions between the two leaders, including a telephone conversation earlier this year during which they agreed to take bilateral ties to new heights.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met Rodríguez during her visit and highlighted the importance of the India-Venezuela partnership.

High-Level Delegation Accompanies Rodríguez

The Venezuelan leader is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers responsible for foreign affairs, economy and finance, science and technology, communication and transportation.

During the visit, the delegation is expected to interact with Indian industry leaders and visit facilities related to the energy, pharmaceutical and automobile sectors to explore opportunities for future collaboration.

Strategic Importance of the Visit

Rodríguez’s visit comes at a time when India is increasing engagement with energy-producing nations to ensure stable supplies and diversify import sources. Analysts view the visit as a significant step toward strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between New Delhi and Caracas.

The discussions are expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation in energy security, trade, technology and investment, further reinforcing the growing partnership between India and Venezuela.
