New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday cautioned that the escalating US–Iran conflict could turn into a prolonged crisis with far-reaching consequences, urging the nation to remain prepared for multiple challenges.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Modi said the impact of the war may not be short-lived and could affect India across sectors, from the economy to internal security. He stressed that both the Centre and states must stay vigilant and work in coordination to manage any fallout.

Energy, Trade and Inflation Concerns

Highlighting the economic risks, the Prime Minister noted that tensions in West Asia have begun to disrupt global supply chains, particularly oil, gas, and fertiliser supplies. Such disruptions, he warned, could push up prices and create inflationary pressure in India.

He added that the government is diversifying energy sources and securing supplies through multiple channels to reduce dependence on any single region. Ensuring the smooth flow of trade through key maritime routes remains a top priority.

Push for Diplomacy and De-escalation

Reiterating India’s consistent position, Modi said New Delhi is in touch with key global stakeholders and continues to advocate dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path forward. He emphasized that safeguarding human life must remain the central concern amid rising hostilities.

‘Unprecedented Challenges’ Ahead

Calling the situation “serious and evolving,” the Prime Minister said the conflict presents unprecedented challenges for India, given its strategic and economic ties with the region. He also warned of possible spillover effects on domestic security, with agencies maintaining heightened alert.

Government Steps and Preparedness

Modi informed the House that the government has activated multiple monitoring mechanisms to track fuel availability, supply chains, and essential commodities. States have been advised to prevent hoarding and ensure smooth distribution of goods.

He called for a “Team India” approach, urging all stakeholders to act responsibly and remain prepared, drawing lessons from past crises that required coordinated national responses.

Safety of Indians a Priority

The Prime Minister assured that the safety of Indian citizens abroad remains paramount, with ongoing efforts to monitor the situation and extend assistance wherever required.

With global tensions rising, the government has signaled both caution and preparedness, bracing for a potentially prolonged conflict that could test India’s economic resilience and security framework.
