Nashik: In a shocking case that has rattled Maharashtra, a 67-year-old self-proclaimed astrologer has been arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting multiple women under the pretext of spiritual healing and occult rituals.

The accused, identified as Ashok Kharat, is facing serious charges, including repeated rape of a 35-year-old woman. Police allege that he used intoxicants and psychological manipulation during so-called “healing sessions” to assault victims.

Modus Operandi: Fear, Fraud and Exploitation

According to the FIR, Kharat—who styled himself as “Captain” owing to his past association with the Merchant Navy—targeted women seeking solutions to personal and family issues. He reportedly lured them to his office with promises of spiritual remedies.

Once inside, he allegedly administered intoxicating substances and used threats involving death, black magic, and occult practices to overpower and exploit them.

58 Victims? Chilling Digital Evidence Surfaces

The scale of the alleged abuse came to light after investigators recovered a pen drive containing explicit video recordings of 58 different women. The footage was reportedly captured using hidden CCTV cameras installed inside his office.

Police believe the number of victims could be even higher, as the investigation continues.

SIT Formed, Probe Intensifies

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute has been constituted to probe the case. The Nashik Crime Branch is currently examining digital evidence, documents, and other materials seized during raids.

Fake Office, Real Crimes

Kharat operated from a premises named ‘Oakus Property Dealers and Developers’ in Nashik’s posh Canada Corner area. However, police allege the office served as a front for illegal activities rather than legitimate real estate work.

He had cultivated an image of a powerful spiritual figure, with alleged links to influential political and business circles. Kharat also headed the Shri Ishanyeshwar Temple Trust in Sinnar and owned a temple-cum-retreat in Mirgaon, frequented by prominent visitors.

Dramatic Arrest Operation

In a covert operation, police arrested Kharat from his farmhouse. To avoid alerting him, officers staged a diversion by shouting “thief” outside his residence. Amid the confusion, they entered the premises and apprehended him from his bedroom.

Subsequent searches led to the recovery of a pistol, live cartridges, and several documents, all of which are now under scrutiny.

Political Storm Erupts

The case has triggered a political controversy, with opposition leaders raising questions about the accused’s alleged connections with powerful figures.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare slammed the system for enabling such individuals to operate unchecked and demanded accountability from the state leadership.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged potential victims to come forward, assuring confidentiality and protection.
