Meerut: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated a major boost to regional connectivity by flagging off the Meerut Metro and the high-speed Namo Bharat train from Shatabdi Nagar station in Meerut.

The Prime Minister also took a ride on the metro up to Meerut South station and formally dedicated the entire 82-kilometre Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor to the nation.

Key Sections Inaugurated

As part of the rollout, the Prime Minister inaugurated the remaining stretches of India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), including:

  • the 5-km Sarai Kale Khan–New Ashok Nagar section in Delhi

  • the 21-km Meerut South–Modipuram section in Uttar Pradesh

With this, the full Delhi–Meerut rapid rail corridor has now become operational.

India’s First Regional Rapid Transit System

Designed for speeds up to 180 kmph, the Namo Bharat RRTS is India’s first regional rapid transit network. The high-speed system connects key urban centres — including Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut — with the national capital, significantly cutting travel time.

Sarai Kale Khan, the originating hub of the corridor, is among the stations commissioned during the inauguration.

Meerut Metro: Fastest in the Country

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Prime Minister also launched Meerut Metro services between Meerut South and Modipuram. The metro operates on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat trains, creating a seamless integration of regional and city transport.

With a top operational speed of around 120 kmph, Meerut Metro is being described as India’s fastest metro system. The full stretch can be covered in roughly 30 minutes, including scheduled stops.

Officials say the integrated model will enable high-speed intercity travel alongside efficient intra-city commuting, setting a new benchmark for urban mobility in India.

₹12,930 Crore Projects Also on Agenda

Later in the day, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate and dedicate multiple development projects worth approximately ₹12,930 crore in Meerut. He will also address a public gathering during the visit.

The launch is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh while easing daily commute for thousands of passengers.
