New Delhi: The national capital has been placed on heightened alert after intelligence agencies flagged a possible terror threat in the Red Fort–Chandni Chowk corridor, officials said.

According to security inputs, operatives linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) may be planning an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting key religious locations, including temples in the densely crowded Chandni Chowk area. In response, police and security agencies have intensified surveillance and deployed additional forces across sensitive pockets of Old Delhi.

Sources indicated the suspected plot could be an attempt to avenge the February 6 blast at a mosque in Islamabad, though there has been no official confirmation of the motive.

The fresh alert has revived memories of the devastating car explosion near the Red Fort on November 10, 2025, which killed at least 15 people and injured more than 20 others. The blast occurred during peak evening hours near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station when an explosives-laden Hyundai i20 detonated in slow-moving traffic, setting nearby vehicles on fire and triggering panic in the crowded market area.

Investigators later confirmed the car was packed with ammonium nitrate-based improvised explosives. The incident was treated as a terror attack, prompting a multi-agency probe involving central and Delhi security agencies.

The investigation subsequently exposed links to a wider terror module involving radicalised operatives, including a Pulwama-based suspect believed to be among the key conspirators. Several arrests followed, and security measures across Delhi and other major cities were significantly tightened.

Officials said vigil has once again been strengthened across the capital as agencies work to pre-empt any potential threat.
