Kanpur: Shivam Mishra, son of prominent tobacco businessman K.K. Mishra, was arrested on Thursday — four days after a high-profile Lamborghini crash that injured several people in Kanpur — bringing the controversial case to a dramatic turn amid intense public scrutiny.

Police said the luxury sports car, reportedly worth over ₹5 crore, rammed into pedestrians and vehicles on February 8, leaving around half a dozen people hurt. After initially remaining out of investigators’ reach, Mishra was detained outside his residence Thursday morning.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Srivastava said officers acted on inputs that the accused might attempt to leave in an ambulance, but intercepted him before that could happen. Police added that he was arrested for allegedly failing to cooperate with the probe and repeatedly concealing himself after the incident.

Witnesses present during the arrest said Mishra appeared unwell and was seen with medical support equipment attached to his hand. Relatives and officers assisted him, and a doctor from Delhi consulted on his condition. Following a medical examination, he was produced before an Additional Judicial Magistrate court.

Claims, Counterclaims and Political Attention

The crash quickly turned contentious as the Mishra family publicly claimed Shivam was not driving the vehicle. Authorities, however, maintained that technical and circumstantial evidence established he was behind the wheel — a position reiterated after senior officials pushed for firm action in the case.

Adding to the controversy, a man identified as Mohan surrendered before a Kanpur court claiming he had been driving the Lamborghini at the time. The court dismissed his plea after reviewing the circumstances, and investigators continued to pursue the case against Mishra.

Police sources also indicated that attempts were made immediately after the accident to remove Shivam from the scene — allegations that remain part of the ongoing probe. The businessman’s camp has strongly contested several aspects of the police narrative, keeping the dispute in the public spotlight.

Case Remains Under Investigation

The incident — involving an ultra-luxury vehicle and a well-known business family — has triggered wider debate over accountability, influence and enforcement. Investigators are continuing to examine CCTV footage, witness accounts and forensic evidence as legal proceedings unfold.

With competing claims from the family and police still playing out, the Lamborghini crash case remains one of the most closely watched developments in the city this week.
