New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough for digital knowledge management, Dr. Anil Kumar Jharotia and his team from the Department of Library and Information Science have been granted a patent for their Portable Digital Library Book Management Device, an innovation set to transform how libraries handle digital resources.

According to official records, the patent—number 463609-001—was filed on June 26, 2025, and officially granted on October 21, 2025, by the Government of India Patent Office.

The inventors’ team includes Dr. Dharmendra Kumar Harit, Dr. Deepa Sharma, Dr. Gulshan Kumar Sachdeva, Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Dr. Yadunath Prasad, and Dr. Anupam Sehgal, all of whom contributed to the design and development of the device.

Smart Innovation for Libraries

Explaining the invention, Dr. Jharotia said the portable digital library device is an advanced electronic system designed to store, organize, and display digital books and other e-resources efficiently. It allows users—whether students, researchers, or librarians—to manage book catalogs, metadata, and digital rights both online and offline.

He added that the technology aims to simplify digital resource access and management, particularly in educational institutions and public libraries moving toward hybrid and paperless systems.

10-Year Patent Validity

The newly granted design patent will remain valid for ten years, marking a milestone achievement for the department and reinforcing India’s growing contribution to digital innovation in education and library sciences.
