Kualalampur: US President Donald Trump arrived in Malaysia on Sunday morning, kicking off a high-voltage Asia tour aimed at reshaping Washington’s role in the Indo-Pacific. Touching down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 9:35 a.m. (local time), Trump was greeted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and a lively cultural reception featuring dancers waving the national flags of both nations.

The visit marks Trump’s first attendance at the ASEAN Summit since 2017 and his first trip to Asia since returning to the White House. His presence signals a renewed US push for influence in a region increasingly defined by strategic rivalries and economic realignments.

During his two-day stay, Trump will participate in the 47th ASEAN Summit — themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability” — and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Anwar. He is also expected to witness the signing of a historic peace declaration between Thailand and Cambodia, a US-brokered deal that ends years of deadly border clashes.

The White House said the president’s engagements in Malaysia will emphasize “security partnerships, free trade, and regional stability.” Analysts see this tour as Trump’s bid to reassert American leadership amid China’s growing clout in Southeast Asia.

After Malaysia, Trump will fly to Japan for a one-day visit to meet newly-elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, followed by a stop in South Korea for the APEC Summit. There, he is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for crucial talks on trade, technology, and the war in Ukraine.

For Malaysia, hosting Trump as ASEAN chair offers a diplomatic boost. For Washington, it’s a statement — the US is back in the Asian game.
