Trump–Putin Alaska Summit on August 15

Washington/Moscow: In a high-stakes diplomatic move, US President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss the war in Ukraine — a venue chosen for its symbolic and geographic proximity to Russia.

Trump announced the summit on Truth Social, calling it “the highly anticipated meeting” between the two leaders, with further details to follow. The Kremlin later confirmed the plan, saying Alaska was a “logical” choice, and revealed Trump had also been invited to Russia for a potential second summit.

A senior White House official told CBS News that plans remain fluid, leaving open the possibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s involvement.

Alaska’s leaders welcomed the development. Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed cautious optimism, hoping the talks could “end Russia’s catastrophic war in Ukraine” on fair terms. Governor Mike Dunleavy hailed Alaska’s role as a neutral ground for global diplomacy.

The exact location of the meeting remains under wraps, but both sides are framing it as a potential turning point in the conflict.
